Toward a Peaceful Community...
At the closing ceremony of the 12 Days of Action to END Violence Against Women, there were 435 postcards hanging behind the rose bearers.
The rose bearers were there signifying, honouring and remembering those women lost through violence.
The postcards were pledges from men in this community to never commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women.
They were gathered by local high school social justice clubs, on Main Street and in the legislature, in people’s workplaces and in their families.
And you show great leadership – You, the men of this community, are reconsidering what masculinity means, pledging to always respect elders, to boycott sexist media, to step in to peacefully resolve conflict, you are role modeling and actively teaching non-violence.
One young man wrote: “To end violence against women, I will keep doing what I am already doing – that is loving and respecting my mother and sister. I keep that in mind because every woman is someone’s mother or sister or daughter or grandmother, and they are all worthy of respect.”
And from MLA Arthur Mitchell: “To END Violence against women, I commit to challenge every statement, joke, and anti-women comment I hear from any man today and every day.”
Your actions and your pledges honour us. They honour all the women in your lives, and they honour the ongoing work to end violence.
I look forward to the positive impact - the shift toward peace - that your pledges, and all your commitments to non-violent action, will make in this community.
I offer you, and all those who gathered postcard pledges, my profound thanks.

Men Pledge to END Violence
The postcard pledging campaign has taken off! More than 1000 cards are circulating, and should be returned by Thursday to be displayed at this Friday, December 4th's memorial.
There has already been a profound and moving response to the campaign, with hundreds of cards signed already, symbolizing the commitment of men in this community to speak out and to take on personal actions to end violence against women.
Each of these men is pledging to never commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women, and many have added actions they do or will do... They are honouring elders, loving and respecting the women in their lives, and raising their sons to do the same.
These men are making change, and are helping us all work toward a culture of peace. Are you?

THANK YOU to volunteers!
Take Back the Night was super successful this year -- there were 64 participants (11 of them children). Thanks to Rising Sun for the amazingly powerful opening prayer song, to Renee for delivering an inspiring and thoroughly rousing speech, and to our drum circle leader. Thank you to all the women who baked vagina- and breast-shaped cookies for the event, and to all the other lovely volunteers who did security, staffed the drink table, and who helped clean up afterward. Hurrah!
Thank you, also, to the 7 extraordinary volunteers who helped at the Superhero Dance Party Waves of Resistance fundraiser. You were focused, dedicated, amazing initiative-takers and just generally held everything together most marvelously. Thanks to Jordi and Sasha for DJing, too!
Thank you all!
